Dr Semba spells

In a recent ruling the ASA considered a consumer complaint against a Dr Semba’s internet advertisement. The advertisement promoted the services of the advertiser under the auspices of being a healer with "supernatural abilities”, capable of treating or curing conditions such as "… epilepsy, high blood pressure, fever, depression, eczema and a whole lot of other infections.” and "… miscarriages and still births. The complaint argued that these claims were unsubstantiated and amounted to an exploitation of peoples’ superstitions or beliefs.

All reasonable steps were taken by the ASA Directorate to elicit a response from the advertiser, but the advertiser failed to respond. Based on the information before it, the ASA Directorate ruled that the claims relating to the advertiser’s ability to cure the above mentioned diseases and its ability as a spiritual healer were unsubstantiated, and in breach of the Code.

We request members not to accept advertising from Dr Semba promoting his unsubstantiated healing abilities.
